Brey on McAlarney: 'I think we have some hope'

On the heels of a disheartening three-point road loss to St. John's and just 48 hours before trying to avenge a 15-point setback to Villanova, Mike Brey entertained a horde of media that had gathered to talk about sophomore point guard Kyle McAlarney, who was placed on disciplinary suspension Monday by the University in the aftermath of his arrest for marijuana possession on Dec. 29.

Brey can only hope he gets another a chance to work with the Staten Island native.

"Kyle and I have communicated closely through it all," said Brey, moments before the start of Thursday's practice in the Joyce Center. "I think he and his family know how I feel about him as a young man. That makes me feel good. We've got to continue to support him.

"The biggest thing I said (to McAlarney) was, 'I hope I get a chance to coach you again.' That will be something that has to work itself out over the next couple of months."

During McAlarney's seven-game suspension, Brey talked about the importance of maintaining McAlarney's hope.
