Pettigrew's rising star casts shadow over doubters

CatsIllustrated.com ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - If college basketball scholarships were awarded the same way political elections are determined, Steffphon Pettigrew would be on his way to the University of Kentucky as the first write-in candidate to win by a landslide.
Since early in the season there has been a swelling grassroots campaign, waged mostly through internet message boards, to get UK coach Tubby Smith to take notice of the Elizabethtown High School standout.
Supporters, growing in stride with the Pettigrew legend, argue the kid is a player, citing his state-leading 35 points and 14.4 rebounds per game, gaudy numbers that should make him a strong contender for Kentucky Mr. Basketball.
