BYU made demands in the Big East negotiations that realistically made it impossible for the Big East to invite the Cougars. BYU demanded that it control all TV rights to ALL of its home games, effectively eliminating itself from consideration. ESPN had agreed to allow BYU to join the Big East in 2012 because ESPN holds both the BYU and Big East rights, but BYU got greedy.

Even the Longhorn network only gets 1 game to televise outside the Big 12 television package, so what BYU was demanding essentially would have created a two tier television deal, and BYU would be the only occupant of the top tier. This was after the AD and President had verbally supported BYU as an equal partner in the Big East.

BYU overreached. Boise State, Houston, SMU, UCF and Navy will all announce as soon as a western partner to replace BYU is announced to satisfy the requirements of the Idaho Board of Education. BYU has no one to blame but itself, as it will now only get a BCS bid by going undefeated, and even then, it will not be playing for any national titles. The competition it faces will be too weak to get consideration, even if undefeated.

This will prove to be a great opportunity for BYU destroyed by greed, a characteristic one does not expect to see in a faith-based institution.

If true it's not about greed, but rather exposure and control of its own destiny. I don't believe that BYU was as interested in the Big East as some of the reports out there claimed.

Then the admin is pretty dumb. BYU will be left behind.

Yep. Pretty dumb move by BYU if true. The Big East would give BYU a opportunity to play for Championships and a BCS Bowl Game. Won't get that as an independent if you're not Notre Dame.

I'm disappointed in BYU not joining. I was looking forward to seeing your program. It would have also given you exposure out east and plucking a few good Florida kids for your program wouldn't have hurt either.

It is funny how BYU is saying it turned down the Big East. BYU approached the Big East. BYU offered to join with conditions. The Big East rejected BYU with those conditions, but said they could join as equals. BYU "rejected" that, I suppose, but generally BYU was applying and got rejected, not the other way around.

BYU does not want to play in the BIG EAST for the same reason a Big East Basketball team would not want to play in the MWC. The brutal truth is the Big East Sucks in Football.

BYU already screwed up it's chance at the Big 12 with similar demands. They were as good as in as a replacement for aTm.
