Signing Day Highlights

As it tends to go with BYU in recent years, National Signing Day went off without a hitch or a surprise.

Cougar head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced the signing of 17 new players to the program to go along with 12 returning missionaries.

All but two of the 17 new players had committed to BYU prior to the start of the 2011 football season.

Heading the class of new signees is Eagle, Idaho's Tanner Mangum (6-3, 195), rated the No. 3 quarterback in the country and a top 60 recruit overall nationally by Rivals.com. Mangum threw for over 3,885 yards and 35 touchdowns during his senior year and led his team to the 5-A state title game.

Tanner is the reigning Elite 11 Co-MVP and was tabbed as an MVP at the Under Armour All-American game. He was also named to the 7-on-7 All-Tournament team at The Opening presented by Nike. Mangum will serve a mission prior to enrolling at BYU.

Mangum is part of a quarterback trivecta for BYU in the class of 2012. Taysom Hill (6-2, 210) and Ammon Olsen (6-3, 198 So.) both enrolled in school in January after recently returning home from missions.

Hill was the 2008 5-A Idaho Player of the year and signed with Stanford in February of 2009. He left for a mission in Australia before enrolling and had a change of heart while serving. Taysom is known as a duel-threat player who threw for over 2,200 yards and rushed for nearly 1500 yards during his senior season.

Olsen was the 2008 Utah Gatorade Player of the year and 5-A MVP at Alta High School. He passed for over 3,220 yards and 36 touchdowns his senior season. He also rushed for 860 yards and 11 TDs. Ammon saw action in six games as a freshman at Southern Utah in 2009, passing for two touchdowns on 8 of 14 attempts.

On the defensive side of the ball BYU reeled in two of the top defensive players in the West.

Defensive end Troy Hinds (6-5, 235) of Davis High School was considered by most as the top recruit in the state of Utah. Troy was rated as the No. 14 defensive end in the country and a four-star recruit by Rivals.

He was offered by a number of high-profile programs including the likes of Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. At BYU, Hinds is projected to play outside linebacker when he returns from his mission. He will leave for his mission before he joins the program.

The Cougars also secured the services of inside linebacker Butch Pau'u (6-0, 220) from Servite High School in Anaheim, California. Pau'u is listed as the 19th best inside linebacker in the country by Rivals.

Butch earned a number of accolades following his senior season, including be named a First-Team All-State player. He was also named First-Team All-Orange County and the Trinity League MVP. He plans to join the team this fall and then leave for a mission after his first season.

Other players of note in the BYU 2012 class includes wide receiver Dylan Collie (5-11, 175), the younger brother of former Cougar and current Indianapolis Colt Austin Collie, Jamaal Williams of Summit High in California who rushed for over 1,200 yards as a 16-year-old senior, and Josh Weeks, Arizona's all-time career leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
