BYU lands O-line commit
As is the case often times with BYU, they have landed a commit who they will not see on the field til 2016.
Herring is a 6-foot-6, 270-pound tackle from Gilbert, AZ. BYU was pretty thorough in their recruitment of Herring, they have been in contact with him since he was a freshman.
"Since from my freshman year BYU has been recruiting me, that is the first year I went up to their football camp and they pulled me up to play against the juniors and seniors for the second part of the day. And they have always kind of been in contact with me since then," said Herring.
While at the camp when he was a freshman he got a long really well with former Cougar, Rob Morris who helped coach students at the camp. Since that time he has continued to a build a relationship with Coach Tidwell who is a family friend since his time as head coach at Eastern Arizona. The last few years though it has been Coach Poppinga who has built that relationship and been visiting and recruiting Herring.
Playing football for the Cougars was not always a thought from Herring, saying "I always thought BYU was a good school but growing up I never thought I would be good enough to play college and then my freshman year when BYU started recruiting me I fell in love with the school."
This year Herring had a great time at BYU's junior day, and at that visit with him mom he got his first D1 offer, but did not commit right away.
"It was after the junior day and they offered me and my mom to stay and they would feed us lunch and give is a tour of campus, and after that we had a position meeting and Coach Mendenhall said he wanted to talk to me in his office and he asked me what my goals were, what I believed in and what I wanted and then he said okay, and read a letter and extended the offer," Herring continued saying,"I told him (Coach Mendenhall) I wanted to talk to my dad before and that I would let him know as soon as I could. And I called my dad and he super excited but a little upset I didn't commit right away."
Herring holds 3.48 GPA and was also receiving interest from Washington State, San Jose State, Arizona and Arizona State.
