BYU Basketball gets its first home and season win
The BYU men's basketball team had their first Game of the season in an exhibition contest against division three opponent Colorado College.
The two teams were meeting for the 12th time with the first 11 meetings coming before 1937.
BYU started a small but extremely quick line up and took advantage of their speed early and often in a 94-59 victory on Saturday night in Provo.
The Cougars pushed the tempo every time they had the chance to create open looks and fast break scoring opportunities. The Cougars got out to an 11-0 lead early in the contest before the Tigers scored nine of the next ten to cut the BYU lead to three.
The game remained close with the Tigers even taking a lead midway through the first half. It took a great defensive play by Frank Bartley that led to a monster dunk by Nate Austin to bring the Cougars and the Marriott Center crowd to life. That dunk started a Cougar 11 to nothing run but Colorado College hung around thanks in part to some good shooting.
After the Tigers cut the BYU lead to five with just over 35 seconds left in the first half, BYU Scored five quick point to take a 49-39 lead into the break.
The second half had a much different feel as the BYU defensive pressure led to easy transition baskets. The Cougars were able to stretch the lead to 30 in the first nine minutes of the half on the strength of a 24-4 run.
BYU pushed the lead to as high as 43 points before coasting home to a 35 point win.
The Cougars finished with four players in double figures led by Matt Carlino with 23 points followed by Tyler Haws with 14 as well as Kyle Collinsworth and Anson Winder with 13. Collinsworth also registered 11 rebounds to lead BYU.
Colorado College was led by senior guard Ryan Milne who ended up with 23 points in a losing effort.
