BYU continues to add talent to the QB stock

When BYU fans hear that a high school QB has committed to BYU, they take a special interest in learning more about that player. BYU's QB commit for the 2013 class will be 6'2, 196 lb Billy Green from Washington. Last year for Kings High School, Green threw for 2,500 yards with 40 TD's and 8 INT's and rushed for 400 yards with 4 TD's. He led his team to a 9-3 record and to the state quarter finals.

Green watches film on Drew Brees and tries to learn his mechanics and what he does so well. He tries to emulate Brees because he is one of the top QB's in the NFL but also because Green feels like that is who he is most comparable to.

"He is one with kind of the same height. He's 6'1 I'm 6'2, he wants to stay in the pocket and make the throws and at the same time if he needs to get out of the pocket and run he can. He is a great leader on and off the field. He's really smart and makes the right throws," said Green.

Billy Green was being recruited by Boise State, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and Colorado and didn't start hearing from BYU until just a few months ago. Coach Poppinga had talked to one of Green's coaches who shared insight and info about him. BYU then began contacting him and had Billy come down for a visit.

As BYU was showing a strong interest in him, he was doing the same with them. He began to do a little homework himself and started learning about the school and its history.

"I researched it a lot, I always knew about the great quarterback history but when I really looked at it in depth it was really impressive. Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon all those guys were college greats and NFL greats. And how Ty Detmer is a Heisman trophy winner."

A week after his first visit to the campus, Billy attended Junior Day and after the first day Coach Doman told him that they were going to offer him a scholarship and that he needed to meet with Coach Mendenhall who wanted to offer it to him personally.

"Through the whole recruiting process I have never met a coaching staff like them and that was really a huge part of why I committed to them, just because of the coaching staff. I felt really comfortable with them. I'm really excited to play for them and just can't wait to get down there."

"When we're off the field he [Coach Doman] is real laid back and I feel very comfortable talking with him and then when we get on the field he was telling me what to do, jumping on me and showing me how to do it the right way."

After having seen the stadium, the classrooms, the facilities and having a friendship with not just a few coaches but, as he told us, ALL the coaches, Billy came away impressed and committed his allegiance to BYU. The feeling of a BYU recruit as QB has got to feel a little bit different than any other position.

"It was an incredible feeling, I mean I am still kind of on cloud nine. I get more excited every day, it's just an incredible feeling that BYU would want me to come down and play quarterback for them."

He seemed to have done enough research on BYU that just after receiving his offer he committed. So what was the first thing he did after committing to the coaches?

"My dad and I after I had got offered stopped by the bookstore and geared up. I got a couple shirts, a couple shorts and sweatshirt."
