BYU went to Stanford and kept the score keeper busy

BYU guards Tyler Haws and Matt Carlino combined for 57 points as the Cougars out lasted the Stanford Cardinals 112-103.

For their first road game of the season, the Cougars traveled to Stanford to play the Cardinals as part of the ESPN college Basketball tip-off marathon and were off and running from the start.

Even though BYU had no answer for the Cardinals dynamic one-two punch of Chasson Randle and Dwight Powell, they still had enough fire power to take home a huge road win.

Carlino got the Cougars going early by scoring seven points in the first four minutes. Stanford was able to keep pace thanks to their scoring point guard Chasson Randle. Randle had 13 of the first 21 Cardinal points. That is when the Cougar scoring depth began to take over.

BYU got contributions in the first half from Haws, Anson Winder, Kyle Collinsworth and Eric Mika to take a 54-46 lead into half time.

The Cardinals were able to hang in the game thanks in part to a late surge by Powell and some great free throw shooting.

After making three early three-point shots the Cougars got their lead by attacking the rim every chance they got. Collinsworth was the catalyst in the opening half with 12 points and 7 assists, followed by Haws with nine, and Winder with eight.

As fast paced as the first half was, the second half was more so, thanks to remarkable scoring outputs by Carlino and Haws.

BYU stretched the lead early in the second as the Cougar back court heated up. Stanford had no answers for the Cougar guards, as BYU widened the gap to as many as 19 points. Powell and Randle did all they could to keep the Cardinals close, but were never able cut the lead to less than eight.

The Cougars finished the night with six players in double figures, led by Tyler Haws. Haws finished the game with 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field as well as eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Carlino ended up with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting along with five rebounds and three assists. Collinsworth had 14 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, three steals and a block. The starting front court also played well as Mika and Austin each registered 12 points. Austin also added eight rebounds and two blocks. Winder rounded out the Cougar players in double figures with ten points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Stanford was led by Randle who ended the night with 33 points and seven rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Powell who had 28 points, along with Anthony Brown with 16 points and John Gage with 12.

Powell did more than just score, also finishing with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The one place the Cougars need to improve is their free-throw shooting. BYU missed 15 of 43 shots from the line, including 14 by the starters.

BYU will be back in action on Friday night as the take on Mount St. Mary's back home in Provo as part of the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic.
