Catching up with BYU kicker Skyler Southam

Skyler has been waiting a long time to play football for the BYU Cougars. The standout kicker from Heber City, UT committed to BYU when he was just a sophomore at Wasatch High School. Many programs such as Cal and Stanford tried to get him to flip throughout his high school career, but he never wavered in his commitment to the Cougars.

Skyler returned home from serving an LDS mission in Santiago, Chile in January '18 and will join the football team in April. He looks to compete for a starting spot right away.

CougarNation: Has the BYU coaching staff talked to you about what kicking duties you will be doing?

Southam: The plan is to try to do all three: kickoffs, kicking, and punting. Coach Sitaki told me yesterday to keep working on all three and come ready to compete for a starting spot. Currently I am trying to learn the rugby-style punting as well.

CougarNation: What is your career long field goal?

Southam: In JV I kicked a 57-yard field goal and in varsity I kicked one 53 yards.

CougarNation: What are your goals for the upcoming 2018 season?

Southam: The goal right now is to get back into kicking shape as soon as possible. I want to go in and compete for the starting jobs in kicking and punting this year.

This U.S. Army All-American is one Cougar fans can get excited about.
